In 1965, Frank Oppenheimer spent the year in London on a Guggenheim Fellowship. During this time, he studied in depth three European science museums: one in the South Kensington district of London, the Deutsches Museum in Munich, and the Palais de la Decouverte in Paris. He became convinced that science museums were vitally needed to supplement formal science education as well as for the general public.
